WHY GERMAN?

German is spoken by over 130 million people worldwide. Here are some top reasons to learn German:

Career

  • Germany's economy ranks number one in Europe and number four worldwide.

  • Germans are leaders in the field of engineering.

  • Germany is home to many international corporations, many of which also operate in the US (adidas, Aldi, Volkswagen, Mercedes, Siemens, Trader Joe's, T-Moblie and many more!)

  • German is the second-most commonly used scientific language in the world.

Culture

  • German is the language of many philosophers, composers, artists and authors, such as Goethe, Marx, Nietzsche, and Kafka, of Mann, Brecht, and Grass. Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, and Schubert, Brahms, Schumann, Wagner, Mahler, and Schoenberg spoke and wrote German, as did Freud, Weber, Einstein, and Heisenberg, Kant, Hegel, and Heidegger.

  • Approximately 44 million Americans claim German heritage.

  • Learn about traditions such as Oktoberfest, Christmas Markets, St. Nikolaus, Maifest and more!

Language

  • German and English are closely related, making them very similar, which can make it easier for native English speakers to learn German.

  • There are many cognates and loan words between English and German: Haus (House), windig (windy), schwimmen (swim), Katze (cat)

I really enjoyed learning about another language and the culture of it. I've always wanted to learn another language but Spanish was always too hard for me to do and I thought German would be good as my mom is part German.
